If you go to the http://www.redcross.org website, you can find disaster preparation checklists, recovery guides and fact sheets for over 22 types of serious emergencies including flooding, earthquakes, tornadoes, etc. If you go to the category for winter storms, you will find a detailed checklist on what to do during a power outage, how to handle frostbite and hypothermia, and a generalized winter storm checklist.

The winter storm checklist explains that during bad winter weather it is important to keep your gas tank full so your fuel line won’t freeze. This is also essential to remember in a blizzard that turning your faucet to a small trickle of running water will keep pipes from freezing. It is recommended if you are snowed in, that you have on stock a gallon of water per person per day and a 3 day supply of non-perishable food, flashlights with batteries and a 7 day supply of medications. Also, during the winter storm, be aware of proper ventilation of heating devices so that your family is safe from carbon monoxide.
